Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to help.

Often clients will be apprehensive about getting an assessment done. This is completely natural. But there is nothing to be worried about. Assessments are about gathering the important information you need in order to make informed decisions about your wellbeing and future. We hope this page provides you with some helpful background and addresses any questions you may have regarding the assessment. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

How long will my assessment take?

Assessments are comprehensive evaluations that take several hours to complete. All assessments begin with an interview, which can take an hour or longer. Completing the intake questionnaire prior to your appointment helps us collect important information and will save you time on the day of your appointment. Following the interview process, you will get started with the formal testing, which can take anywhere from four to seven or eight hours to complete. In some cases, the assessment will be completed over the course of two days.

Do I get to take breaks?

We will work at your pace. We understand that testing can be mentally tiring and, for example, sitting for long periods can be difficult for people with back problems, so we allow breaks as necessary to manage these issues.

Do I need to bring anything to the appointment?

Yes. Please bring your completed intake questionnaire and reading glasses if you need them.

You are also welcome to bring anything that might help you during the day. For example, if you use an Obus Forme to sit more comfortably you might want to bring that along. We would encourage you to bring any medication you normally take, including pain relievers.

While there is a restaurant in our building and snacks available at the convenience store nearby, some people prefer to bring a lunch.

Is there anything I can do to prepare?

No. These assessments aren't like school tests. You can’t study for them and, unlike school tests, neuropsychological tests are not graded pass or fail. In general, your performance is compared to others with a similar background such as age, gender and educational experience.

While you cannot study for these tests, your best preparation is to get a good night's sleep. It is also a good idea to have something to eat prior to the appointment. If you're not a breakfast person, feel free to bring snacks with you.
